On this page you will learn two rescue techniques to descend down steep slopes. There are two reasons why Pro Ski Instruction (PSI) starts the continuous-parallel instruction with steep-slope techniques.
The first is that there's a fair chance you will encounter a steep slope and cannot go around it. The second reason is that you actually have already learned the basics of the two safety techniques in previous lessons.
The two techniques are:
- Side-slipping, also called side-skidding. You have already learned that on First time on skis. You can use this technique on a steep slope that has a smooth snowdeck, including an icy.
-
If the snowdeck is rough, you should use the steep-slope version of the Plow with Parallel. This video explains that technique very well:
Do note that the given name to it in the video, Step Turn, is easily confused with the Star Turn, which is included on First time on skis as well. To keep matters as clear as possible, it would better be called Plow with Parallel for steeps.
